Nordic Language Seminar on 16th April

On 16th April the Embassies of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, in cooperation with the University of Maastricht, invite to a Nordic language seminar under the title "Small languages in a globalizing culture. English: a threat for Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish?"

The English language influences the Nordic societies in many ways. The impact of English seems to increase as the world becomes more globalized. How do we deal with this? And what does the future hold for small languages?

In this seminar experts from the Nordic countries and The Netherlands give their views on the influence of English on their languages. Is it a threat or an enrichment? What role does the English language play in Finland? How do the Danes view English in their society? Is the situation different in Norway or Sweden? Can Scandinavians still talk to each other in their mother tongues or are they more often turning to English? Can the situation in The Netherlands be compared to Scandinavia? These questions and many more will be raised and answered during the afternoon seminar.

The seminar is open to anyone interested in the Nordic languages and the influence of English on small languages.

The seminar is offered free of charge and takes place at University of Maastricht, 16th April 2010 at 14:00

Registration before 1st April: kkk@mfa.no
